High Dimensional Heterogeneous Data based Animation Techniques for Southeast Asian Intangible Cultural Heritage Digital Content.

The project AniAge (High Dimensional Heterogeneous Data based Animation Techniques for Intangible Cultural Heritage Southeast Asian Digital Content) is a multidisciplinary project involving researchers in Artificial Intelligence and in computer animation. The project covers three main research topics: i) developing new digital animation techniques, ii) management of large and heterogeneous data and iii) an application to the intangible cultural heritage (IHC) of Southeast Asia countries. Contributions from CRIL (Centre de Recherche en Informatique de Lens, CNRS UMR 8188 et Université d’Artois, France), will concern mainly the second research topic.
Computer animation technologies have considerably boomed and have been widely used for films and Video games. These technologies, however, require much effort and manual labor and are very expensive. It is essential for using these technologies in applications with low costs (such as archiving and simulation / reproduction of ICH contents) to propose effective and less expensive computer animation solutions.
The primary purpose of this project is to meet this challenge by combining researchs from Artificial Intelligence and computer animation. In particular, the objective is to offer original solutions for processing of heterogeneous information, classification from uncertain data, massive data analysis and reasoning with ontologies.
The second purpose of the project is to apply the theoretical results to the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Southeast Asia countries. Southeast Asia region is one of the most dynamic regions in the world with a rich cultural heritage. Part of that heritage is present in museums, temples and archaeological sites, but an important part is present in everyday life. Indeed, various forms of cultural heritage of ancestors are transmitted to new generations. This heritage (such as theaters puppets, dances, etc.) is visually and culturally rich, but it is unfortunately endangered due to modernization and globalization.
The last purpose of AniAge purpose is to promote the exchange of knowledge between the EU with partners in Southeast Asia to encourage mobility and exchange of researchers and disseminating knowledge. This will be achieved by mobilizing researchers on both sides around excellence research projects, workshops, seminars and conferences. The AniAge project consortium consists of six partners: NCCA (National Centre for Computer Animation, Bournemouth University, UK) who is the project coordinator, CRIL (Centre de Recherche en Informatique de Lens, CNRS UMR 8188 et Université d’Artois, France), HMI (Human Machine Interaction Lab at Vietnam National University, Vietnam), CAMT (College of Arts Media and Technology at Chiang Mai University, Thailand), CICT (College of ICT at Can Tho University, Vietnam) and ViCube (Vision, Virtual Visualization Lab at and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia).
For the implementation of the project, four work packages are scheduled. The first is the capture and processing of data, which is heterogeneous and massive. The second and third work packages concern technological developments based on Artificial Intelligence and computer animation. The last work package is dedicated to the diffusion and dissemination of the project’s results.
